The Kukës Waste Management Zone (WMZ) corresponds to the same territory as the Kukës County. It comprises three municipalities: Kukës, Has and Tropojë. The 3 municipalities have approved a Regional Plan for Integrated Waste Management of Kukës WMZ. The waste disposal service is directly operated by the Municipalities, from 140 voluntary drop-off points in 1.1m3 metal containers that are often in bad condition, with very limited collection means. None of the approved existing disposal sites in the zone have a valid environment permit. The overall objective of the consultancy is to ensure feasibility and develop the most cost-effective, sustainable and resilient design for a Municipal Solid Waste Management system. The project includes: waste treatment facilities – the upgrade and extension of the existing sanitary landfill and construction of the new one; construction of the transfer stations; construction of waste treatment plant, composing facilities and leachate and biogas treatment; and the closure and rehabilitation of the existing legal and illegal unsanitary landfills/dumpsites.
